Thermal and non-thermal emission in the Cygnus X region
Radio continuum observations detect non-thermal synchrotron and thermal
bremsstrahlung radiation. Separation of the two different emission components
is crucial to study the properties of diffuse interstellar medium. The Cygnus X
region is one of the most complex areas in the radio sky which contains a
number of massive stars and HII regions on the diffuse thermal and non-thermal
background. More supernova remnants are expected to be discovered. We aim to
develop a method which can properly separate the non-thermal and thermal radio
continuum emission and apply it to the Cygnus X region. The result can be used
to study the properties of different emission components and search for new
supernova remnants in the complex. Multi-frequency radio continuum data from
large-scale surveys are used to develop a new component separation method.
Spectral analysis is done pixel by pixel for the non-thermal synchrotron
emission with a realistic spectral index distribution and a fixed spectral
index of beta = -2.1 for the thermal bremsstrahlung emission. With the new
method, we separate the non-thermal and thermal components of the Cygnus X
region at an angular resolution of 9.5arcmin. The thermal emission component is
found to comprise 75% of the total continuum emission at 6cm. Thermal diffuse
emission, rather than the discrete HII regions, is found to be the major
contributor to the entire thermal budget. A smooth non-thermal emission
background of 100 mK Tb is found. We successfully make the large-extent known
supernova remnants and the HII regions embedded in the complex standing out,
but no new large SNRs brighter than Sigma_1GHz = 3.7 x 10^-21 W m^-2 Hz^-1
sr^-1 are found.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted by A&A. The quality of the figures is

Effect of iron on the microstructure and mechanical property of Al-Mg-Si-Mn and Al-Mg-Si diecast alloys
This article is made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund. Copyright @ 2012 Elsevier B.V.This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.AlāMgāSi based alloys can provide super ductility to satisfy the demands of thin wall castings in the application of automotive structure. In this work, the effect of iron on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the AlāMgāSi diecast alloys with different Mn concentrations is investigated. The CALPHAD (acronym of Calculation of Phase Diagrams) modelling with the thermodynamic properties of the multi-component AlāMgāSiāMnāFe and AlāMgāSiāFe systems is carried out to understand the role of alloying on the formation of different primary Fe-rich intermetallic compounds. The results showed that the Fe-rich intermetallic phases precipitate in two solidification stages in the high pressure die casting process: one is in the shot sleeve and the other is in the die cavity, resulting in the different morphologies and sizes. In the AlāMgāSiāMn alloys, the Fe-rich intermetallic phase formed in the shot sleeve exhibited coarse compact morphology and those formed in the die cavity were fine compact particles. Although with different morphologies, the compact intermetallics were identified as the same Ī±-AlFeMnSi phase with typical composition of Al24(Fe,Mn)6Si2. With increased Fe content, Ī²-AlFe was found in the microstructure with a long needle-shaped morphology, which was identified as Al13(Fe,Mn)4Si0.25. In the AlāMgāSi alloy, the identified Fe-rich intermetallics included the compact Ī±-AlFeSi phase with typical composition of Al8Fe2Si and the needle-shaped Ī²-AlFe phase with typical composition of Al13Fe4. Generally, the existence of iron in the alloy slightly increases the yield strength, but significantly reduces the elongation. The ultimate tensile strength maintains at similar levels when Fe contents is less than 0.5 wt%, but decreases significantly with the further increased Fe concentration in the alloys. CALPHAD modelling shows that the addition of Mn enlarges the Fe tolerance for the formation of Ī±-AlFeMnSi intermetallics and suppresses the formation of Ī²-AlFe phase in the AlāMgāSi alloys, and thus improves their mechanical properties.EPSRC and JL

Realizing quantum controlled phase-flip gate through quantum dot in silicon slow-light photonic crystal waveguide
We propose a scheme to realize controlled phase gate between two single
photons through a single quantum dot in slow-light silicon photonic crystal
waveguide. Enhanced Purcell factor and beta factor lead to high gate fidelity
over broadband frequencies compared to cavity-assisted system. The excellent
physical integration of this silicon photonic crystal waveguide system provides
tremendous potential for large-scale quantum information processing.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Probabilistic teleportation of unknown two-particle state via POVM
We propose a scheme for probabilistic teleportation of unknown two-particle
state with partly entangled four-particle state via POVM. In this scheme the
teleportation of unknown two-particle state can be realized with certain
probability by performing two Bell state measurements, a proper POVM and a
unitary transformation.Comment: 5 pages, no figur
Quantum asymmetric cryptography with symmetric keys
Based on quantum encryption, we present a new idea for quantum public-key
cryptography (QPKC) and construct a whole theoretical framework of a QPKC
system. We show that the quantum-mechanical nature renders it feasible and
reasonable to use symmetric keys in such a scheme, which is quite different
from that in conventional public-key cryptography. The security of our scheme
is analyzed and some features are discussed. Furthermore, the state-estimation
attack to a prior QPKC scheme is demonstrated.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, Revtex
Benchmark of FEM, Waveguide and FDTD Algorithms for Rigorous Mask Simulation
An extremely fast time-harmonic finite element solver developed for the
transmission analysis of photonic crystals was applied to mask simulation
problems. The applicability was proven by examining a set of typical problems
and by a benchmarking against two established methods (FDTD and a differential
method) and an analytical example. The new finite element approach was up to
100 times faster than the competing approaches for moderate target accuracies,
and it was the only method which allowed to reach high target accuracies.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures (see original publication for images with a
